How to care for your pearls

We all want to properly care for our jewelry. Most of you stop by Jackson Jewelers to let us clean and check your jewelry, but what do you do for your pearls? Here are a few tips to help you properly care for you pearls:
  • Your pearls will stay cleaner if you put them on after you’ve applied your makeup and perfume.
  • Be sure to take off your pearl rings before you apply hand and body creams.
  • Wipe your pearls with a soft, lint-free cloth as soon as you take them off. The cloth can be dampened with water or it can be dry. If damp, allow the pearls to air dry before putting them away. (Jackson Jewelers carries great jewelry cloths, ask us about them the next time you stop by.)
  • Dirty pearls can be cleaned with a mild soap and water solution. (It is best to use a bowl of warm soapy water. Let your pearls soak for a few minutes, then allow them to air dry before you put them away.)
  • Never clean your pearls with solutions that contain ammonia or harsh detergents.
  • Don’t put pearl jewelry in an ultrasonic cleaner.
  • Don’t use abrasive cleaners or rub pearls with abrasive cloth. Both can wear away the nacre coating, leaving you with a plain looking bead.
What’s the best way to store your pearls?
Don't store your pearls with other jewelry, because they can be scratched easily when metal or gemstones rub against them. Find a special slot in your jewelry box for the pearls, or keep them in a soft bag.
Your fine pearl necklaces should be restrung periodically so that you're sure the silk or nylon cord holding them is in good shape.  If you think it is time for your pearls to be restrung, bring them into Jackson Jewelers and let our staff take a look at them. If they need to be restrung, we can take care of that for you too.

New Pearls just in time for Fall!

In my opinion the most timeless piece of jewelry is pearls. A strand of pearls is a classic piece of jewelry that every woman should have in her jewelry box. I know most of you think about the traditional white pearls that you see your grandmother wearing on her wedding day, which are beautiful, but that’s not all there is to offer any more. Today’s cultured pearls come in various shades and sizes. Jackson Jewelers is carrying a new line of Starsay Collection Pearls. I know many of us get very confused when we are trying to choose a nice strand of pearls. I want to help you learn about what is important to look for when you are searching for your perfect strand of pearls. The pearls most of us wear these days are cultured pearls. What are cultured pearls? Cultured pearls are made by an oyster, mussel, or clam. The Starsay Collection pearls in particular are made from a mussel. The process is actually initiated by man. Man inserts a one millimeter of mantle tissue into the mussel. This tissue secretes nacre and initiates the development of a pearl in a pearl sack. The entire pearl is nacre. The nacre gives pearls their unique appearance. As the nacre thickness increases, so does the quality and durability of the pearl and the greater the luster. Pearls with a good quality luster display sharp light reflections. Pearls with low luster look milky, chalky, and dull. You want a pearl that will show the contrast between the bright and darker areas of the pearl. The Starsay Collection pearls do just that. Look below to check out some of the photos of the new line. Jackson Jewelers has great new shades just in time for fall. You really need to head into Jackson Jewelers to really see what they have to offer in their new Starsay Collection of pearl strands, bracelets, and earrings. Check back tomorrow to learn how to properly care for your pearls!
